Austin, TX — A primer-gray 1987 Ford Mustang LX sitting on four mismatched jack stands has officially achieved a milestone in longevity, outlasting three long-term romantic relationships, two residential leases, and a remarkably patient Golden Retriever named Buster.
A Fixture of Total Permanence
While humans enter and exit 34-year-old owner Mark Reynolds’ life with predictable seasonality, the Fox-body Mustang remains an absolute constant on the left side of the two-car garage. Its 5.0-liter V8 engine block, currently resting on a furniture dolly covered in a shop towel, has watched three consecutive girlfriends pack their belongings into moving trucks.
"They always come in here thinking they’re going to be the one who helps hold the trouble light," the Mustang noted, its uninstalled aftermarket headers rusting pleasantly in the humid evening air. "Sarah lasted fourteen months. Jessica made it through two oil changes. Brenda didn't even survive the rear differential rebuild. But look at me: I’m still here, holding down this exact patch of cracked oil-stained concrete."
The Cycle Continues
The project vehicle watched silently through the garage door window this afternoon as Reynolds snapped a fresh headshot for his Hinge profile, strategically positioning himself in front of the engine hoist to project an image of handy, rugged capability.
"He's wearing the clean flannel again," observed the Mustang’s passenger-side torque box. "He’ll tell this new one that I’m 'almost ready for paint.' We all know the wiring harness hasn't been touched since 2022."
Even Buster, who spent seven faithful years sleeping on an old car cover beside the rear axle, eventually succumbed to old age last spring. The Mustang, however, shows no sign of leaving.
